Britpop- Just music or a way of life?

Hello!

So today I'll be talking about my favourite genre of all... Which is of course Britpop. But is it just music (the best in the world, I might add) or is it a way of life? Well, it's both. Here's why.

Britpop is something a lot of people would have grown up listening to, unlike quite a few other genres. It's something you can relate to, something that's been in you for your entire life and will never leave again (this isn't a bad thing!!).

It's something that I've been brought up to listen to. Albums such as Definitely Maybe, Urban Hymns and Word Gets Around were what I listened to in the car, and I'm still listening to now. It's something you can't grow out of unlike perhaps house, pop or punk (some people don't grow out of these genres, but Britpop is extremely different).

Britpop is obviously a type of music, but it's a culture too. I think that Manchester is definitely the main origin of Britpop, since it gave us Oasis, The Smiths, Elbow, The Stone Roses, The Verve, Doves, Morrissey and Ian Brown (not to mention many more huge bands).

A short post today, but what are your opinions on Britpop/British Rock?

Rant About Chart Music!

Hello!

Today's post is going to be rant... I don't usually like ranting, but I thought it would make for entertainment and I'd get my point across :)

One thing I highly dislike (along with many other music fans) is chart music. Why you might ask? Most of it isn't self-written, doesn't involve instruments, is autotuned and just awful in general. So, I'm going to have a look at the top 20 songs in the charts right now, and see what I think of them!

Let's get started then...

No.20- Lean On by Major Lazer x DJ Snake

I'm quite surprised this song is still in the charts... But I've got to say for this song to have reached the charts in the first place is not surprising. Her face is out of pitch and pretty bad in some places, plus the actual tune itself is a bit of a trainwreck. No instruments either :(

No.19- Wings by Birdy

Ah, now this song is a good tune. Birdy herself is a pretty good musician from what I've heard of her, and hey, this song involves instruments! It's a beautiful song and I do quite like it, although could be over-played at some point soon.

No.18- WickedSkengMan 4 by Stormzy

I'm extremely sorry, but I can't write a review on this one because a) I have never heard of the song, b) I have never heard of the musician and c) I think the title explains itself.

No.17- Are You With Me by Lost Frequencies

This song I know, however it is very (very, very) repetitive and has the same lyrics throughout the entire song. After one listen, it becomes extremely boring!

No.16- Locked Away by R.City and Adam Levine

Once again I have never heard of the actual song itself, but I do like Adam Levine and he's an excellent musician, so I hope the song lives upto it!

No.15- Black Magic by Little Mix

In general, I think Little Mix is a good group who (as far as I know) write their own songs. Although this song is a little over-played now, and I think they could be even better with a guitar.

No.14- Drag Me Down by One Direction

This actual song isn't too bad considering it's One Direction, however I have been completely thrown off from their new album since they said it lives upto Oasis. Not so sure this song is sounding very rock and roll yet boys!

No.13- Cool For The Summer by Demi Lovato

As a kid, I used to love Demi Lovato and she began bringing out some decent music with an absolutely stunning voice, however this song has let me down (with a very bad tune) and she's letting her voice go to waste! No!

No.12- Shut Up and Dance by Walk The Moon

I think this is my favourite song in the charts at the moment since it is a happy song with a great tune, however once again no instruments and it's electronic, so I can't fall in love with it :(

No.11- Do It Again by Pia Mia

Once again, I have never heard of either the song or musician in my entire life, so I can't review this one!

No.10- Ain't Nobody by Felix Jaehn

This is the song I was waiting for! I'm very disappointed by this song as it's practically a copy of the old song of which we know and love, with the same chorus and tune... Unfortunately, he should have created his own music and gone with his own idea, so I can't like this song.

No.9- Intoxicated by Martin Solveig

I think I might have heard the chorus to this song, and from what I've heard it's pretty average. Although I couldn't tell you what the rest of the song is like, but not very good I doubt!

No.8- Peanut Butter Jelly by Galantis

Peanut butter jelly time? Nope, not a clue what this song is.

No.7- Marvin Gaye by Charlie Puth and Meghan Trainor

Surprisingly I don't mind this song, although I'm not a fan of either musicians. However, the tune is quite nice compared to some of the others in the charts :)

No.6- Fight Song by Rachel Platten

The song's lyrics are beautiful and meaningful, although this song is extremely overplayed now and I'm no longer keen on it. Although with more songs like this, music could improve (a little, or maybe not).

No.5- Can't Feel My Face by The Weeknd

I don't like the fact that The Weeknd is spelt the way it is for some reason, but the chorus is quite good and the meaning of the song. Although, it's quite dull and irritating after a while.

No.4- Don't Be So Hard On Yourself by Jess Glynne

Once again, not a clue what this song is but I know the musician and her voice isn't all that... I'm starting to sound a bit like Noel Gallagher now haha!!

No.3- How Deep Is Your Love by Calvin Harris

I loved Calvin's old work, but not a fan of his stuff now. This song was okay the first time I played it, but when played live it's played off a laptop and not impressive atall, so this song doesn't get a great rating from me!

No.2- Easy Love by Sigala

(This just shows how much I listen to the charts because I don't know what this song is either)

No.1- What Do You Mean? by Justin Bieber

I've heard one line of this song and it's okay, not my kind of thing atall and Bieber is my least favourite musician, so I'm not 100% sure why it's top of the charts, but hey!

So there you go, that is my review of the current charts, leave a comment if you'd like to see it again and whether you agree with me or not!

10 Chill-Out Songs!

Hello everyone,

Sorry I haven't been posting much lately, but I thought I'd start a new post by describing my 10 favourite Chill-Out songs (in no certain order)!

1. Early Morning Rain- Paul Weller

This song (from Studio 150 Deluxe Edition) is an absolutely beautiful acoustic song which is a lovely song to listen to whilst chilling or, as the title states, early in the morning.

2. Sweet Pea, My Sweet Pea- Paul Weller

There are going to be a few Paul Weller oldies on this list. From the album 'Heliocentric', is one of my favourite childhood songs 'Sweet Pea, My Sweet Pea'. It's a beautiful little song which definitely deserves a space on this list.

3. Handbags and Gladrags- Stereophonics

There will also be quite a few Stereophonics tracks on this list, but my favourite song of all time is 'Handbags and Gladrags' from 'Just Enough Education to Perform'. It's an old song but it's gold, and perfect for a calm day.

4. I Miss You Now- Stereophonics

Another one of my favourite tracks from Stereophonics is 'I Miss You Now' from my favourite album, 'You Gotta Go There To Come Back'. It's not a very upbeat song, but essential to chill out to.

5. Beach Side- Kings of Leon

Another recently discovered Kings of Leon song is 'Beach Side' from 'Come Around Sundown'. It's an amazing song to listen to, particularly whilst watching a sunset.

6. Close To You- Paul Weller

Last Paul Weller song (I promise) that is on this list is 'Close To You', originally by The Carpenters but beautifully covered by Weller from his 'Studio 150' album. Another one of my childhood favourites.

7. Pick A Part That's New- Stereophonics

Clearly by the title of the song it's going to be a lovely song, From 'Performance and Cocktails' is one of my favourite songs to chill out to!

8. Getaway- Stereophonics

The final Stereophonics song is 'Getaway' which makes me want to go on holiday. This track is from 'You Gotta Go There To Come Back'.

9. Us and Them- Pink Floyd

Another old song, but this time by Pink Floyd is 'Us and Them' obviously from 'The Dark Side of The Moon'... Strange, but great!!

10. I'll Be Around- Empire of The Sun

The final song and by no means the least is 'I'll Be Around' by Empire of The Sun, taken from their latest album 'Ice on the Dune'. It is a beautiful and relaxing song!

So there you go, there are my favourite 10 chill out songs!
